The 442 Infantry was a unit within the US Army. It was made up entirely of Japanese American soldiers and more of them came from the Colinas de Oro War Relocation Center than any other Japanese internment camp.

History[]

Sometime in or around 1943, Walt Yoshida joined this unit. He later returned to the Colinas de Oro in January 1945, a celebrated hero. A party was held for his homecoming. He recruited other members of the camp to join the unit. He, however, tried to warn Toshiro Furuya against joining, telling him that the members of his unit were dying faster than they could be replaced and that they were sent into those places that were deemed too dangerous for white soldiers. ("My Sweet Boy")

Behind the scenes[]

  • Actor Lee Shorten, who plays Walt Yoshida on The Terror: Infamy, stated that his character's service in the 442nd Infantry was a big part of why he agreed to play the role.[1]
