History[]
He learned that his daughter went to stay at the Colinas de Oro War Relocation Center, a Japanese internment camp, after becoming pregnant by Chester Nakayama, who was Japanese American. His daughter would eventually deliver both of Chester's children, Enrique and Hikaru, stillborn.
He visited the camp, where he was shocked to see Luz's terrible, listless state following the loss of her children. He informed that her brother, Dennis, had been killed during a campaign in North Africa. He told her that she shouldn't be there, and it was time for her to come home.
Later, he was with Luz when a soldier attempted to interrogate her prior to her release. He mostly spoke for her, though at the end she spoke up herself, giving the names of the children that she had lost. The two of them were permitted to leave the camp, Bart driving them off in his Jeep pickup truck. ("Shatter Like a Pearl")
He brought Luz back to their family home in California, where they lived together, though Luz remained somewhat depressed. He was troubled by her habit of keeping a large box of letters sent to her by Chester Nakayama, letters that she never opened. He encouraged her to get over Chester and instead spend time with Julio, a young boy from church, someone from a good Catholic family who had just recently moved there and therefore didn't know about her and Chester. Though Luz did try to follow his advice, she ultimately ended up again taking off Chester. He drove her to the home of her abuela in Aguayo, leaving Bart a letter.
Bart read the letter and seemed saddened by the news. Before he could act on it, however, he was visited by the yurei of Yuko Tanabe, Chester's birth mother. In Japanese, she spoke to him of her family and her perfect world. Not understanding any of it, Bart asked her to leave. Instead, she possessed him, using his form to rifle through a box and find a map. On it, she drew a line from Bart and Luz's home to Aguayo. She then forced Bart to slam his head forward on the pen into his eye, killing him, and leaving him bleeding out on the table. ("My Perfect World")
After his death, he was missing for many months. It wasn't until over a year later that Luz and her abuela Rocio Trujillo learned of his being missing. Rocio spoke of using the family's old cuanderismo magic to determine whether he was alive or dead, but ultimately decided against it. Both, however, came to suspect he was dead after Chester revealed that Yuko Tanabe had followed them to Aguayo. ("My Sweet Boy")
