The original Cornelius Hickey is a minor character in AMC's The Terror.
Background[]
Hickey is first seen in episode 7 registering his name for service aboard HMS Terror. After receiving his papers, Lieutenant George Henry Hodgson tells him to be back aboard the ship in a month to rejoin the crew. Unfortunately, Hickey doesn't get a chance to leave with them. Not long before he would have left, Hickey bumped into a man named E.C.. Hickey tells the man about the journey to the Polar sea and that they would spend a year before they reach the pacific. The man then killed Hickey by stabbing him to death and threw his body into Regent's canal and then assumed Hickey's identity and joined the crew of the expedition. Three years later, the false Hickey after leading a mutiny tells his subordinates about what he did to the real Hickey with Crozier remarking that "You could have just joined up".
Trivia[]
- The subplot of Hickey being replaced by an imposter was a creation of the show to avoid calling the real Hickey a mutineer and a cannibal.
- One of the key differences between this Hickey and the man claiming to be him, is his prominent Irish accent. Crozier even references this lack of an accent in episode 2.
