Edmund Hoar is a minor character in AMC's The Terror. He is Captain's Steward to Sir John Franklin of the HMS Erebus.

In the series[]

As Captain's Steward, Hoar is usually present at officer's meetings on board Erebus (Go for Broke, Punished, as a Boy). He joins Cornelius Hickey's mutiny, and partakes in cannibalism (The C, the C, the Open C), including of the poisoned corpse of Doctor Henry Goodsir. When Hickey takes the boat out onto the wastes, Hoar is not chained, suggesting Hickey trusts him; nevertheless, when he sees the Tuunbaq approaching in the distance, Hoar runs away, and presumably later dies from the poison ingested by Goodsir (We Are Gone).

In the novel[]

After Franklin's death, Hoar becomes Fitzjames' Steward. Although tall, active, and athletic, he develops scurvy, and is the first man on the expedition to die of it.

Trivia[]

  • In 2019, several items that belonged to Hoar were recovered from the wreck of HMS Erebus. Amongst the items was a stamp with his name on it.
