Hikaru Nakayama was one of two stillborn twin children of Chester Nakayama and Luz Ojeda.

History[]

Hikaru and his twin brother, Enrique were conceived during a night of passion during the forbidden romance of Chester Nakayama and Luz Ojeda. They initially planned to abort the children, not knowing at the time that Luz carried twins, but Luz ultimately decided against it. ("A Sparrow in a Swallow’s Nest")

As a Japanese American, Chester was sent to an internment camp and Luz decided to come with him. It was here that she learned from a midwife that she discovered at the camp, Yuko Tanabe, that she was having twins. Unbeknownst to her, Tanabe was a Bakemono, or shapeshifter and an undead spirit, a yurei.

When Luz's water broke, she was sent to Dr. Kitamura to give birth, despite the doctor disliking her, possibly due to her being a Mexican American in a Japanese American camp. He delivered both of the children stillborn, despite Tanabe possessing his nurse, Nurse Hasegawa, to monitor the delivery. Luz was devastated and only a memorial of two Japanese statuette figures was left of her children, which the Nakayama and Yoshida families prayed over while she lay morose in bed. Chester was initially unaware of the stillbirth of his children, having gotten work as a translator in the field as part of the war effort. For failing to deliver the babies alive, Yuko Tanabe possessed Dr. Kitamaura and forced him to commit suicide by giving himself a C-section. ("The Weak Are Meat")

His and his brother's stillbirth continued to haunt Luz long afterwards. ("My Perfect World")
