John Lane is a minor character in AMC's The Terror. He is the boatswain on HMS Terror.

In The Show[]

Lane can be heard blowing his whistle when Sir John comes aboard Terror in episode 1 but Lane's first physical appearance is in episode 4 where he calls out the different sailors for their watch duties. He later appears in episode 7 where Crozier has asked him and a few other men to stay behind and pilot Terror. Crozier tells the men that they deserve a great reward for their sacrifice. Lane tells him that their reward is that they perish aboard the ship, sleeping under English blankets and smelling English coal and not out in the Arctic weather. He and his party are presumed to have died off screen.

In The Book[]

In the novel, Crozier burns Terror down and Lane joins the main party of men. Both he and Captain of the Hold William Goddard are killed by seaman Magnus Manson and cut up for food by Golding.

Trivia[]

  • The subplot of Lane and other sailors staying behind on Terror was not in the original book. It was added in only after the wreck of Terror was discovered intact and appeared to have been remanned at one point.
