Julio was a young Mexican American man living in California. He was said to come from a good Catholic family.

Bart Ojeda, the father of Luz Ojeda, encouraged her to pursue a romantic relationship with Julio, as he was new in town and therefore was unaware of her indiscretion with Chester Nakayama. Luz, still despondent about the stillbirth of her and Chester's children, Enrique and Hikaru, was resistant to the idea. Despite this, she eventually acquiesced by having dinner with Julio. Afterwards, they talked, and he told her that he actually liked her, and that he wasn't one of those guys with ten gals lined up for dates. He told her that he didn't want to rush her into anything she wasn't ready for. She thanked him for evening and they parted. Shortly afterwards, however, she again ran off with Chester.
