Obon was a Japanese festival to honor the spirits of the ancestors. It was said that during the festival, the spirits of the dead would revisit household altars.
Despite injunctions against "spook stuff" by the U.S. Army, the Japanese American residents of the Colinas de Oro War Relocation Center, a Japanese internment camp, decorated the village they had formed in the camp for Obon. During this time, the dead did indeed walk among them in the form of Yuko Tanabe, who navigated the crowd wearing a mask.
