In The Show[]

Sir John Barrow first appears in episode 4 when Lady Jane Franklin and Sophia Cracroft arrive at the Admiralty to discuss the whereabouts of her husband's expedition. Lady Jane is worried that the expedition is stuck in the ice and tries to pressure them into organizing a rescue party but Barrow dismisses her concerns stating there is no cause for alarm, that he has full confidence in her husband's command, and that the ships are provisioned for two more years. Despite Sir John Ross agreeing with her, Barrow remains unconvinced and Sir James Clark Ross assures her that if no word is heard by 1850, he'll go searching for the expedition himself.

In episode 8 Barrow is briefly mentioned by Captain James Fitzjames when he's speaking with Captain Francis Crozier about his war experiences and how he got appointed to the Franklin expedition. According to Fitzjames, he saved Barrow's son George from a scandal in Singapore and upon returning to London Fitzjames was promoted to Commander and given a position on the expedition.

By episode 10, public support had built up enough to launch a search expedition and Sir James visits Barrow's household to bid his farewell but George Barrow informs him that his father is ill. Sir James explains the search strategy but is disappointed when he learns the primary motive of the rescue operation is not to find the missing ships and men but rather discover the Northwest Passage which the elder Barrow hopes will be found in his lifetime.
