St. Jerome Orphanage was an orphanage in California in the 1940s.
After becoming pregnant by Chester Nakayama, Luz Ojeda got a job at this orphanage. As Chester did not have much money of his own, or a plan for her, she intended to raise the child at this orphanage once it was born until she could afford something better. Chester did not like the idea, but did not have any better plan of his own.
Luz was shocked when a number of soldiers entered the orphanage. They took one of her charges and asked after several other Japanese names, explaining that they were being taken away for safety under Executive Order 9066. They told her that any child with even a single drop of Japanese blood would have to go.
Realizing what this meant, Chester came to the orphanage, telling her that they needed to leave. Reluctantly, she agreed to his plan to take shelter with his photography professor, Professor Henkoff. ("All the Demons Are Still in Hell")
